The Art of Detachment

Detachment. Apparently detachment is the main lesson I am supposed to learn in this lifetime. Well, that is, according to my life path number and how the stars aligned the night I was born, if you believe in that type of thing.. which you should. Luckily for you reading this, however, this is not about life path numbers or how the stars align. This is about how to let go. As I’m writing this I feel like the majority of people fall into two categories, people who automatically thought of something they need to let go and people who thought – Let go of what? If you are someone who fell outside of those two categories, I love your beautiful brain of thoughts and promise you will still get something out of this. I can only make this promise because we all need to get familiar with the lesson of detachment.

When you think about humans and the way the world works, we are truly owners of nothing except our peace of mind and our spirit. We do not own anything forever. Everything has its own divine purpose on earth, and each thing has its own season. For example, you do not own your kids forever. You are their guardian for a season and then they go on to create their own lives with you included. You do not own your home forever, but hopefully it will be passed down throughout generations. You don’t own your car forever, clothes, friendships, degrees, money, not even health or disease. The only thing that we personally have forever, is our spirit. So you should protect it with everything in your earthly body. The saying “don’t let anyone break your spirit” is so true! The older I get the more I find so much more wisdom in small quotes like that. Do what works for you and your spirit. I cannot preach this enough.

We cannot afford to lose our spirit on this worldly plane. Our spirit is all we will take with us on our next journey from this life. If something’s isn’t sizzling in your spirit, exit! If someone doesn’t sit well with your spirit time and time again, leave that person alone! If you find yourself in situation after situation when dealing with certain things, remove those things! Because while it’s important to make connections and learn lessons, the most important thing you are going to learn is to how to care for your spirit. How to feed it and how to sustain it. How to love it with care and with toughness. How to be comfortable in just sitting with your spirit alone, but not feel alone. How to detach from all, but be connected to everything. How to live and not exist. How to find and create your happiness, and how to cope with your sadness. How to seek God, and then how to wait on God.

The answers to all of these things help nurture your spirit, and by learning the answers you begin to learn detachment from this realm. Detachment from believing what is given to us at face value with no questions, but still being comfortable trusting knowing you will never truly know. Detachment from the ideals that we have to fit into a box, when we are not built for a box. The box doesn’t even exist. The rules are fake. The walls are fake. The ceiling isn’t real. Create your own reality by serving your spirit. Detach from the fake reality, and walk in your power. This is the art of detachment.
