Small Efforts, Big Results

So this morning as I was getting ready for work, I had a light bulb moment. Now I must start by saying I have those a lot, I mean I think I’m a genius so it happens you know? Well anyway, per usual I turned on my shower to let the water warm up while I started picking out my work clothes. This is usually a task for me. I mean, it starts me off on the edge every. single. morning. Who needs morning caffeine when you can get your adrenaline pumped by throwing clothes around at 7 am looking for a specific black shirt that nobody else will notice is different from the rest BUT if you don’t find it you will have an anxiety attack about missing clothes for 10 minutes with the water starting to run cold, amiright?

Well, not today. Today wasn’t like that at all. I actually enjoyed getting ready, and you know why? Because I put in a little bit of effort 2 days ago – that I did not like myself for doing at that moment – but it set me up for success today. And you know what it was? l folded and put my clothes up after I washed them. I know, I know. A daunting task that no busy adult ever wants to be bothered with and puts off as long as they can. Yes that task, which actually only took about 30 minutes of my day, let me enjoy my morning enough to write this post. The sense of relief it gave me to be able to go directly to that one drawer and get exactly what I needed in less than 0.5 seconds, was nothing less than exhilarating. The ease of strolling my fingers through my color coordinated wardrobe and finding THE black dress that I had on my mind as soon as I opened my eyes this morning, magnetic! Why don’t I do this all the time? I will always do this! I thought to myself. True bliss!

So then I began to think, why don’t I do this all the time… why don’t I think like this all the time with any tasks that I have to do? Literally instead of complaining about putting up my clean clothes that I was able to do in the comfort of my own home, why not just do it because I know how good it’s going to feel in 2-3 days? Instead of complaining about taking the time to go to the gym, why not just go because in two months from now on my trip I know I’m going to look SO good in my dresses that I am going to want to bite a chunk of my own ass? Why not wash the dishes when it’s on my mind and I have the time, so when I come back from the store later I walk into a clean house and feel relief and joy instead of instant stress. Why not set myself up for success?

That’s goes for any and everything. All it takes is a little bit of effort and time on one day to coast through life later, I mean that’s the honestly the big picture. Do a little bit more today, to do a little less tomorrow. Invest in yourself now and you will see the payoff in a multitude of ways. Invest. In. Yourself. If you think of it that way, then you will always only have to do a little bit a day to get by. A task done today helps the stress fade away, okay I’m done with the phrases, but seriously – put those clothes up. Set yourself up for success not just because you can, but because you deserve it. You owe it to you.
